Cleaning up your iTunes library can be tedious. You can’t finish it within 24 hours, especially if you have a huge library of songs on iTunes. However, you’ll thank yourself later after you’ve finished the job.

You can start an iTunes cleanup project by going through these steps:

  1. Grab the right metadata of each song.

Each song has its own data, which will be used for iTunes to catalog it. The data must be accurate. If there’s a need for you to tweak metadata of the track or album, you just have to change the information.

To modify the details, right-click on the album or song.

Choose Get Info option.

Then, fill out the necessary fields that can help iTunes in cataloging songs in your library.

  1. Obtain album art

iTunes can grab album art automatically. However, there are times that it fails to do so.

To obtain missing album art, you can right-click on an album and choose Get Album Artwork.

Or you can Google the album artwork and drag and drop it to iTunes Artwork field.

  1. Delete duplicate files

If you have a large iTunes library, then it’s highly likely that you have a few duplicates stored there.

You can remove duplicate entries by clicking on the View option found on the menu bar and choose Show Duplicate Items option.

Then, manually select those duplicate entries and delete them.

  1. Remove some of the songs

You may have 300 songs in your iTunes library. But, pretty sure, you only listen to half of your collection regularly.

Thus, it’s just wise to remove those songs from your library and transfer them to other places, like an external hard drive.

Choose songs that you’re not planning to listen to in a few months. Then, remove and transfer them to an external hard disk.

If you don’t have an external HD, you can opt to use iCloud. This service is free for up to 5GB. However, if you need additional space, you can always purchase extra space.

Or you can use your old computer that’s still functioning to house your songs.

When you add music to your library, make sure that you tag the songs properly. This will make cleaning up a lot easier in the future. An iTunes cleanup is more than just organizing your song collection. It’s also about speeding up iTunes allowing it to work more efficiently.

How to make iTunes run faster or perform more efficiently? You may ask.

Listed below are some tips and tricks that can make iTunes run a bit faster or help you use it easier.

  1. Make all songs in iTunes have the same volume

This is possible through a feature known as Sound Check. What it does is that it normalizes all songs in your library.

You can do this by going to Preferences menu and click Playback.

Look for the Sound Check option and click the box next to it. This is a great way for you to have stable volume on all your music.

  1. Call recently added tracks

With iTunes, you can call up the tracks you’ve recently added without actually knowing their names.

To do this, go to View menu and choose As List.

Make sure that the Date Added column is visible by checking the box next to Date Added on View Options. This will give you a list of tracks that you recently imported.

  1. Uncheck selection

Unfortunately, iTunes doesn’t have obvious check/uncheck all option. However, if you press the Command key and check a box, those songs or stuff listed on the current view will be checked or unchecked.

Or you can just choose a group of songs or tracks and right-click to see a menu that contains Check Selection or Uncheck Selection option.

iTunes is surely a great tool to house your tracks, TV shows and movies. However, without knowing its hidden abilities, you’ll never learn how to make it run more efficiently.

The DRM system is a good way to prevent users from distributing copyrighted materials. Unfortunately, this system can be too restrictive that it might not allow you to play legally purchased songs using your mp3 player and other compatible devices. This is especially true if the songs that you want to play were purchased before 2009.

To remove the DRM from any song you’ve purchased, you just need to follow the steps below. They don’t require special software to perform this task.

1.    Launch iTunes and update it.

This is to make sure that you’re using the latest program for this purpose.

2.    Set up the software.

You must first configure iTunes to burn audio CD. Then, choose the right disc format.

3.    Make a playlist

This is important as you can’t burn protected songs to audio CD without first creating a custom playlist.
Although you can add as many as you want in that playlist, you must make sure that the total playing time doesn’t exceed your blank CD’s capacity.

4.    Left-click on the playlist you’ve created on step 3.
5.    Hit the File tab and click Burn Playlist to Disc.
6.    Insert blank CD.

You should use rewritable disc so you can reuse it many times.

7.    Click the Proceed button.
8.    Import those media files you’ve burned onto the audio CD to your iTunes library.
Once the burning session has been completed, your computer will automatically eject the CD. Insert it back to rip the audio CD you’ve created.
The files you’ve imported are now free from DRM. From there, you can easily play the tracks to any type of device that supports mp3 files.

Apple keeps on updating its iOS to provide better experience to its users. When updating to the latest version, however, it is a must that you back up your device. Even though the new operating system for Apple’s mobile devices is safe, it would still be better to make a backup copy of the files, documents and other important data from your phone before updating.

Here are the quick steps on backing up the data on your iDevice, and also on how to ensure that you don’t lose any important iTunes files when cleaning up your library.

There are two ways to back up your device. The first one is iTunes, i.e. on your computer. The second method is through iCloud or simply cloud.

Backing up through iTunes

This method is easy.

  1. Connect the device to your computer where you want your phone’s data to be stored. Although you can connect your device wirelessly, it is ideal to connect through USB sync cable that comes with your phone.
  2. Launch iTunes, if it does not start automatically.
  3. Check the box next to Encrypt backup option. This will enable encryption for the backup process.
  4. Start the syncing process

If your phone is not set to auto-sync, then go to Summary button for your iDevice. Under the Backups section, click the button that says Back Up Now.

The backup process can take a few seconds to minutes. It will depend on how big the data you are transferring to your computer.

Making a backup through iCloud

This one requires wireless network. If you are not connected to a wireless network, then it would be best to use the first method.

  1. Connect the device to a Wi-Fi network. Make sure that it is a safe network.
  2. Tap its Settings
  3. Go to iCloud
  4. Choose Storage & Backup option
  5. Tap Back Up Now option

That’s it! Easy isn’t? I always suggest that you backup before you cleanup, it’s just safer in my opinion then going without one.

iTunes may be a simple software installed on your PC or Mac but it has taken a lot of responsibilities lately, including downloading of movies, TV shows, music and syncing iOS devices. To better manage this tool, there are tricks that you can do to help you become a better media manager.

  1. Control iTunes remotely

With the use of your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, you can remotely play songs via iTunes. But you need to download a free Remote app for this. By downloading such app, you can view the interface of your iTunes library from your PC on those iDevices. You can also download and use an iTunes cleaner to make sure everything is sorted in the correct way, and of course to clean up many unnecessary songs.

  1. Share songs between computers

Regardless of whether you’re using PC or Mac, you can see media files of your iTunes library from those computers (up to 5 units). This is an ideal way to copy music, TV shows or movies between two iTunes.

All you have to do is go to Advanced menu on those computers and turn on Home Sharing.

You can also play songs from your iTunes library on your computer through your iPod with limited capacity. You can do this by going to your iPod’s Settings menu, choose iPod and click Home Sharing. By connecting your iPod or other iDevices with limited storage capacity, you can easily access gigabytes of songs from your iTunes library on your computer to your iDevice.

  1. Make ringtones

Why look for a music ringtone on Apple Store when you can have the song that you want to use right on your iTunes library?

To make a certain song your music ringtone, find that track, right click on it, click Get Info, and choose Options tab. Then, choose the right time frame. Make sure that you choose Create AAC Version so you can use it as a ringtone.

Note: Make sure to clear your iTunes ringtones before creating one, as it’s likely that you will lose your own creation, which happened to many users already.

A Mac computer is designed to perform fast. However, as you put more files and data into it, it would surely slow down your system, including the iTunes clean up. But there are ways that you can boost its performance and make it run fast again.

Cleaning up your Mac can eliminate clutter within your hard drive. If your computer is running like a turtle, you can clean it up and improve its speed. Once you are done, you will notice that it runs like its new again.

Listed below are the steps on how to clean and speed up your Mac:

Back up your computer

Cleaning your Mac means you are eliminating the clutter. Hence, it only makes sense to back up your important files that you do not want to lose during the cleanup process.

To back up your Mac, you need an external drive and launch Time Machine, which is a built-in app of OS X that automatically backs up your computer.

 Look into the startup items

Too many apps that open at startup can hurt your Mac’s boot-up time. These apps prevent your system to load the OS in a timely manner.

To remove them, you should go to System Preferences, visit Users & Groups and click Login Items tab. The list includes apps that open on startup. Uncheck those that you do not need when your computer boots up.

Start cleaning your hard drive

After you have unchecked those apps, you must clean up your hard drive through a repair disk button. You can do so by going to Disk Utility program. Your system will now scan your desktop and make necessary repairs.

Then, clear its cache. To do this, you have to download a free app.

Remove all apps that you no longer use.

Place additional RAM

Boosting your Mac’s performance also requires adding more memory. If you want a cheaper RAM, avoid buying it from Apple.

Note: Keep in mind that this was just a simple guide to speed up your Mac and the clean up performance of your iTunes library.

The iPod is a versatile device that lets you listen to various types of songs or use it as a hard drive. But the majority of its users are utilizing its features to add music to this device so they can have something to listen to when they are out and about.

Apart from the songs that you already have on your computer, you can also copy songs from CD to your iPod. This is possible through the use of iTunes. It is called ripping.

Here are the steps you need to take if you wish to get songs from your CDs, which eventually will make cleaning your iTunes library a whole lot easier!

Insert the CD that you wish to copy

It can be any CD from your favorite artist, be it Andrea Bocelli, Rihanna, or Mozart.

Choose your preferred format

This is the first thing that you must consider. You must know what format you prefer before you start import songs from your CD. Mp3 and AAC are the two most common formats.

Launch iTunes

On your computer, open iTunes.

  1. Then, click Preferences section
  2. Find the When you insert a CD option
  3. Scroll down to its options
  4. Click Import CD
  5. Hit the Import Settings
  6. Select the type of file you want to have and its quality. Although choosing higher quality gives you better sound, it will result in bigger file size. Experts do choose 256 kbps to have good file size without sacrificing sound quality.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Save the changes.

Connect your iPod

Now that you already have the songs in your iTunes library, with or without the cleanup, you can transfer them to your iPod. If you have a large library, some songs will not be transferred. This will depend on your iPod’s storage capacity. If it exceeds its capacity, Apple will choose which ones to be transferred, depending on the size of the files that will fit into your iPod.
